Newspapers have headlines. Novels have names. Websites have headings.
In fact, every noteworthy publication starts with a great title.
So what are you going to write on the front cover of your yearbook?
If you just want to read a list of the best yearbook titles, keep scrolling down the page. However, if you want to find out how to craft the perfect title for your yearbook, read on.
How to Write Your Yearbook Title
There are no essential ingredients when creating a title for your yearbook cover, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
Firstly, think about time. What year is the yearbook being published? What year did you start studying at your school, college, or university? If the yearbook is for your club, when did you join? Typically, yearbook titles include one or all of these dates on the cover; forexample, “2013-2018”.
Next, consider how your yearbook title relates to the school or club itself. Does your school have a specialist subject that you could draw upon? Are there specific colours or names that are particularly relevant? Maybe there’s something special about your town or city that you could mention in your title? For example, “London’s Finest”
Have a think about the theme or style of your yearbook. If you want to keep to a consistent theme throughout your yearbook project, this should extend to the cover as well. For example, if you’re going for a newspaper yearbook theme, you could title it “Breaking News: Class of 2013 Leaves School”. Your theme name could even be the title, if it works.
Finally, are you able to ignore all of the advice above and write something really simple? Would that be better? Unfortunately, I can’t help you to make that decision!
Now we need to make sure we take everybody’s opinion into account.
Gather a list
Everyone’s going to have their own idea of what to title the yearbook project, from your yearbook committee to the entire student body. Some of these ideas will be better than others.
Start a list to gather all of these ideas in one place. You could ask people to contribute using comments on a social media post. What’s important is that everybody feels that their voice is being heard, as the yearbook is for everybody.
Call a vote
Ask the entire student body their opinions on the list. Which titles are their favourite? A super easy way to manage this is to ask everybody to read through the list on your social media post and Like their favourite titles (as comments). Facebook is a great way to organise this.
You could also use a site like Straw Poll to quickly set up an easy-to-manage poll.
Mock it up
Using Yearbook Hub, mock up what your title will look like when it’s included in your cover design. You can even print out a few different title choices and share them with the entire year.
Have a think about where you want to position your title, how you should style it, and the font you want to use. Is there any accompanying imagery you want to include?
If you’re going for a faux-leather finish, bear in mind that, as this will be foil-blocked in a single colour, your title will be presented differently.
