There’s a lot of chatter around our office and the design Studio about Game of Thrones. Fantasy landscapes, dragons and a constant battle for power (similar to the likes of Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings I suppose).
We 100% condone using a cult TV series or film as inspiration for your yearbook design. Let’s take a look at some design ideas for a Game of Thrones yearbook.

Set the scene for your Game of Thrones-inspired yearbook design with textures and (if you can find them) landscapes for backgrounds – similar to those in the series. Stone wall backgrounds are great for yearbooks, as they add some texture but aren’t too distracting. Maybe you took a school trip to Ireland, in which case this design was meant to be as I’m reliably informed that some of the series was filmed there!
Flags work really well for tutor group pages – give your house, or tutor group a flag design for identity. How about your yearbook cover? Could your school logo or crest work on a flag?
I’m a big fan of maps, and they work really well as a page background (bonus!). Use a fantasy map, or stylise your school grounds map to use on your pages. How about a double page near the beginning of your yearbook, with pointers to flags or shields of each tutor group or house?
This brings us nicely onto the Great Houses: House Bolton, the North; House Arryn, the Vale; House Frey, the Riverlands; House Greyjoy, the Iron Islands; House Lannister, the Westerlands; House Tyrell, the Reach, etc. each have their colour code, sigil and motto for identity. Yearbook profile pages can be much more than just a tutor group, or house name for a title – add some ‘pizazz’ with your own sigil. Dare to try really ornate frames on your profile photos and fancy borders in each page corner to complete the look.
For yearbook page titles opt for serif fonts, such as Copperplate in uppercase. I know it’s tempting to go to town with fancy fonts, but I’d suggest sticking with a non-decorative font (such as Helvetica) for the rest of your text, simply because it’s easy to read.
